NSN Message for June 19, 2014 - Button/Coin Cell Battery Risks

Stay informed through the

NEIGHBORHOOD SAFETY NETWORK

June 19, 2014

Small Products Pose Big Risks

Button and coin cell batteries are small products that can pose a big risk. This week, the U.S. joined 12 other countries and jurisdictions around the world to bring attention to this problem. You can be part of this global information effort.

These small batteries are being used more and more in small electronics around the home that are frequently within a child's reach. Flashlights, TV remote controls, keyless entry remotes, clocks, watches and musical greeting cards are just a few of the products that use these tiny batteries.

Thousands of injuries have been reported worldwide from incidents in which young children, and some seniors, have unintentionally swallowed the batteries. Many of these incidents have had immediate and devastating consequences. A child can swallow a coin cell battery and suffer chemical burns in as little as two hours.

To help parents and caregivers in your community prevent tragic battery-related incidents:

Download and distribute the poster Button Battery Dangers to remind parents and care givers of the type of products that contain these dangerous batteries - http://1.usa.gov/1nhb6cz.

Share the video Beware of Tiny Button Batteries - http://1.usa.gov/1nPUGuN.

Share photos from #WorldBatterySafety on Twitter of the type of damage button and coin cell batteries can cause - http://bit.ly/1iaSgHV and http://bit.ly/1vU7jZd.

Thanks for spreading the word and making your community safer.

Carl
