Netflix scoops up Tina Fey's 'Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt'

Posted: 22 Nov 2014 01:44 AM PST

Tina Fey, left, and Ellie Kemper from "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt" attend the NBC Network 2014 Upfront presentation at the Javits Center on Monday, May 12, 2014, in New York.
Netflix has scooped up Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, a Tina Fey and Robert Carlock collaboration that was supposed to run on NBC — until NBC's "drama-heavy mid-season schedule" got in the way.
The new comedy produced by Universal Television stars The Office andBridesmaids alum Ellie Kemper as Kimmy, who is trying to start over in New York City after living in a doomsday cult for 15 years. The 13-episode first season, set to air in March, follows the wide-eyed, but resilient Kimmy as she finds a job, gets a roommate and navigates New York City in her light-up sneakers.
Kemper's all-American face inspired the series, Fey and Carlock said in a statement provided to Mash by Netflix.
"We are thrilled to have the opportunity to debut Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt exclusively on Netflix, which has proven to be such an outstanding place for distinctive, original programming," Fey and Carlock said. "Happily, we will still collaborate with our longtime partners at Universal Television to fulfill Netflix's two-season order. We grew up at NBC and will continue to develop broadcast projects with them as well."
The show's "offbeat premise, hilarious and rich characters and serialized storytelling" make it and Netflix a perfect match, said Cindy Holland, Vice President of Original Content at Netflix.
The show has a two-year commitment on Netflix and features several familiar faces from Fey's and Carlock's NBC show 30 Rock. Jane Krakowski plays Kimmy's boss and Tituss Burgess will be her roommate. The cast also includes Lauren Adams, Sara Chase, Sol Miranda and Emmy winner Carol Kane of The Princess Bride.
NBC Entertainment Chairman Robert Greenblatt called the situation a "win-win" and added that "Universal Television will do everything possible to see that Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt becomes a long-running hit on Netflix."
"While it was originally developed for NBC, we have a very drama-heavy mid-season schedule so we're thrilled about this Netflix opportunity; it's an instant win-win for everyone, including Tina, Robert, and Universal Television," Greenblatt said.

British company reunites lost teddy bears with owners

Posted: 22 Nov 2014 01:42 AM PST

The future looks stuffed with promise for lost teddy bears in Britain.
Scenario: You're traveling on a train with your family in London. The train pulls up to the station and you quickly herd your bags, your bigger luggage and kids off the train. You're off the train and as the cars pull away, your youngest proclaims that he left his best friend, a stuffed bear affectionately and creatively named "Teddy," on the train.
Previously, if this event transpired your child would cry, you'd get him a new teddy bear and go on living life. Sure, down the line your child may come around on the new bear but it wouldn't be the same and you know it.
The people at Teddy Rescue want to ensure the above scenario never happens again.

"Unable to negotiate the gap unaided, these little bears and other cute cuddly toys have been separated from their families," the Teddy Rescue site explains. "Eventually, aided by our helpful and friendly staff, they have found their way to Lost Property in the vaults of Bristol Temple Meads Station."

GOP-led panel debunks Benghazi theories in Friday night news dump

Posted: 22 Nov 2014 01:40 AM PST

Libyan military guards checked one of the U.S. Consulate's burnt out buildings in September 2012.
WASHINGTON — A two-year investigation by the Republican-controlled House Intelligence Committee has found that the CIA and the military acted properly in responding to the 2012 attack on a U.S. diplomatic compound in Benghazi, Libya, and asserted no wrongdoing by Obama administration appointees.
Debunking a series of persistent allegations hinting at dark conspiracies, the investigation of the politically charged incident determined that there was no intelligence failure, no delay in sending a CIA rescue team, no missed opportunity for a military rescue, and no evidence the CIA was covertly shipping arms from Libya to Syria.
In the immediate aftermath of the attack, intelligence about who carried it out and why was contradictory, the report found. That led Susan Rice, then U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, to inaccurately assert that the attack had evolved from a protest, when in fact there had been no protest. But it was intelligence analysts, not political appointees, who made the wrong call, the committee found. The report did not conclude that Rice or any other government official acted in bad faith or intentionally misled the American people.
The House Intelligence Committee report was released with little fanfare on the Friday before Thanksgiving week. Many of its findings echo those of six previous investigations by various congressional committees and a State Department panel. The eighth Benghazi investigation is being carried out by a House Select Committee appointed in May.

The attacks in Benghazi killed U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens, foreign service officer Sean Smith, and two CIA contractors, Tyrone S. Woods and Glen Doherty. A Libyan extremist, Ahmed Abu Khatalla, is facing trial on murder charges after he was captured in Libya and taken to the U.S.
In the aftermath of the attacks, Republicans criticized the Obama administration and its then-secretary of state, Hillary Rodham Clinton, who is expected to run for president in 2016. People in and out of government have alleged that a CIA response team was ordered to "stand down" after the State Department compound came under attack, that a military rescue was nixed, that officials intentionally downplayed the role of al-Qaida figures in the attack, and that Stevens and the CIA were involved in a secret operation to spirit weapons out of Libya and into the hands of Syrian rebels. None of that is true, according to the House Intelligence Committee report.
nam-
The report did find, however, that the State Department facility where Stevens and Smith were killed was not well-protected, and that State Department security agents knew they could not defend it from a well-armed attack. Previous reports have found that requests for security improvements were not acted upon in Washington.
"We spent thousands of hours asking questions, poring over documents, reviewing intelligence assessments, reading cables and emails, and held a total of 20 committee events and hearings," said Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Mich., the committee's chairman, and Rep. C.A. Dutch Ruppersberger of Maryland, the ranking Democrat, in a joint statement.
"We conducted detailed interviews with senior intelligence officials from Benghazi and Tripoli as well as eight security personnel on the ground in Benghazi that night. Based on the testimony and the documents we reviewed, we concluded that all the CIA officers in Benghazi were heroes. Their actions saved lives," they said.
Rep. Adam Schiff, a California Democrat who serves on the intelligence panel and the Benghazi select committee, said, "It's my hope that this report will put to rest many of the questions that have been asked and answered yet again, and that the Benghazi Select Committee will accept these findings and instead focus its attention on the State Department's progress in securing our facilities around the world and standing up our fast response capabilities."
nam-
Some of the harshest charges have been leveled at Rice, now Obama's national security adviser, who represented the Obama administration on Sunday talk shows the weekend after the attack. Rice repeated talking points that wrongly described a protest over a video deemed offensive to Muslims.
But Rice's comments were based on faulty intelligence from multiple agencies, according to the report. Analysts received 21 reports that a protest occurred in Benghazi, the report said —14 from the Open Source Center, which reviews news reports; one from the CIA; two from the Defense Department; and four from the National Security Agency.
In the years since, some participants in the attack have said they were motivated by the video. The attackers were a mix of extremists and hangers on, the investigation found.
"To this day," the report said, "significant intelligence gaps regarding the identities, affiliations and motivations of the attackers remain."

Crowds come out for revolution anniversary in Ukraine

Posted: 22 Nov 2014 01:36 AM PST

Ukrainians on Friday celebrated the one-year anniversary of the protests that toppled its pro-Russian president.
The civil uprising, sparked by President Viktor Yanukovych's decision to walk away from an association agreement with the European Union in favor of closer ties with Moscow, began when a few hundred protesters gathered on a central square in Kiev on Nov. 21. But it quickly evolved into a violent struggle after riot police attacked peaceful protesters with clubs on Nov. 30.
Over the course of the next days and weeks, hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians flooded the streets in protest. Eventually, Yanukovych fled Ukraine for Russia and an interim pro-Western government took control of the country.
Russian photographer Evgeny Feldman captured the celebrations in photographs as they kicked off on Nov. 21, a day known in Ukraine as the "Day of Dignity and Freedom."

No, I am a felt version of your father.
A long time ago, in a craft-minded household far, far away, two felt-sensitive siblings came up with the idea of remaking the original Star Wars trilogy in yarn.
The result, Star Wars Epic Yarns by Vancouver natives Jack and Holman Wang, will be published next April by Chronicle Books. The trio of books each contain 12 classic scenes from A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi respectively, rendered in the adorable felt format.

Waiting for the grand jury: The Ferguson case laid out

Posted: 22 Nov 2014 01:31 AM PST

A casket containing the body of Michael Brown is wheeled out of Friendly Temple Missionary Baptist Church in St. Louis on Aug. 25.
Any day now, a grand jury will decide whether to indict Ferguson officer Darren Wilson in the shooting death of Michael Brown.
Wilson fired several shots at 18-year-old Brown on Aug. 9, leading to riots in the St. Louis suburb. Wilson has been on paid leave since the shooting. Meanwhile, protesters calling for his arrest have become a permanent fixture in Ferguson. On Monday, Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon declared a state of emergency ahead of the decision.
But why has it taken this long to decide whether to indict Wilson? This is what members of the community have wondered about for months as details about what really happened that day have slowly trickled out.
Here's what we know about Aug. 9 and the evidence that the grand jury is considering, gathered from reporting done by The Associated Press, St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the New York Times and Mash.

Timeline of the shooting

QUICK FACTS
1. The incident occurred on Canfield Drive around noon.
2. Wilson chased Brown on foot.
3. The entire encounter lasted less than 90 seconds.

11:54 a.m.

Brown and his friend, 22-year-old Dorian Johnson, leave a convenience store on West Florissant Ave. Surveillance video released the week after the shooting showed Brown stealing cigarillos from the store.
After the two men leave Ferguson Market and Liquor, they walk north on West Florissant and turn right on Canfield Drive, heading for the apartment complex. Once on Canfield, they walk in the middle of the street.

12:01 p.m.

Officer Wilson arrives on Canfield Drive and tells the two men to get out of the middle of the street. Accounts vary on what happens next but Brown and Wilson (who is still inside his patrol car) get into a fight (more details on that later) and Wilson's gun fires two times. Brown runs away and Wilson get out of his vehicle to chase the teenager on foot, continuing to fire.
Brown was shot six times, including twice in the head. Evidence shows that the entire incident happened in less than 90 seconds.

Eyewitness accounts

QUICK FACTS
1. There was a scuffle inside Wilson's vehicle.
2. Multiple eyewitnesses say Brown had his hands up.
3. Wilson and Brown faced each other in the street in the final seconds.

Johnson told reporters that the situation quickly escalated after Wilson demanded he and Brown "get the fuck onto the sidewalk." Police said Brown and Wilson got into a scuffle while the officer was still in his vehicle, at which time Brown reportedly reached for Wilson's gun and was shot.
However, Johnson, who said he was within arm's reach of Brown and Wilson during the incident, rebutted those claims, saying the teenager never went for the gun.
There have been several accounts of how the fatal incident played out. But one recurring story is that Brown had his hands in the air — an image that has become synonymous with the shooting and the subsequent protests.
Several witnesses said Wilson and Brown faced each other in the middle of the street, and the teenager had his hands up as though surrendering just before Wilson discharged the final shots.

Darren Wilson's side of story

QUICK FACTS
1. Wilson said he feared for his life.
2. The officer claimed Brown reached for his gun.
3. Wilson went to the hospital after the shooting.

In his first public account of the shooting, Wilson told authorities that he feared for his life and was trapped in his SUV when the fight first broke out. He says that Brown reached for his gun during the altercation and that the weapon fired twice in the car, hitting the teenager in the hand.
Wilson also said Brown, who was 6 feet 4 inches tall and weighed nearly 300 pounds, punched him repeatedly, according to the New York Times. The officer's face was swollen and he had cuts on his neck.
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch obtained surveillance footage that reportedly showed Wilson leaving the hospital about two hours after the shooting. Other officers and a union lawyer accompanied him.

Autopsy reports

QUICK FACTS
1. Brown was shot six times, including twice in the head.
2. The teenager was shot in the hand at close range.
3. Experts say the report doesn't support some eyewitness accounts.

Official autopsy report findings

Brown's official autopsy report showed the teenager had been shot in the hand at close range, which corroborates at least part of Wilson's story.
Experts say the official autopsy report doesn't support eyewitness accounts that Brown was shot while running away from Wilson or that he was shot while his hands were up.
The Post-Dispatch, which first published the full autopsy report, consulted St. Louis medical examiner, Dr. Michael Graham, to interpret the findings. Graham, who is not part of the official investigation, said Brown's autopsy report "does support that there was a significant altercation at the car." The accompanying toxicology report also revealed Brown had marijuana in his system.
There was also foreign matter "consistent with products discharged from the barrel of a firearm" on Brown's thumb. However, there was no stippling, which is powder burns around wounds that usually indicate a shot fired at close range.

Private autopsy report findings

private autopsy report, which Brown's family requested, showed that the 18-year-old was shot at least six times: four bullets in the right arm and two in the head. One of the bullets entered the top of Brown's head, suggesting that he had his head down when hit by the fatal bullet.
The private report — performed by Dr. Michael M. Baden, former chief medical examiner for the City of New York — found no gunshot residue, indicating that the gun wasn't fired at a close range. However, Brown's clothes were not tested for this particular report.

Details in dispute

There are several versions of what exactly happened in final moments of Brown's life, but there are two main details that are up in the air.

Who started the fight?

First, there are conflicting reports about who started the scuffle inside the vehicle. Wilson, who said he feared for his life, told the grand jury that Brown reached for his gun and that that resulted in at least two shots fired inside the vehicle.
However, Johnson, Brown's friend, said the teenager never reached for gun. He also alleged that Wilson attempted to choke Brown and grabbed his arm in an effort to pull him into the vehicle. Johnson also said Wilson threatened to shoot.

Was Brown fleeing or charging?

The second part that witnesses and police disagree on is what Brown was doing when Wilson fired the fatal shot.
Wilson said Brown was running toward him, while witnesses said Brown was running away. Other accounts claim that Brown had his hands in the air as though he were surrendering when the officer fired the bullet hit Brown in the top of the head.

Why Ferguson?

Given that police shootings happen every day in the United States, why has the case in Ferguson ignited such a heated debate? To put it very simply, it comes down to a deep racial divide there.
Wilson is a white officer and Brown was a black teenager. After Brown was killed, many Ferguson residents said the shooting represented a tipping point and that black residents for years have been subjected to police brutality in Ferguson.
The black  that of the white population. Yet the powers that be — the Ferguson mayor, four of the five members of the city council and most of the police force — are white.

Ferguson-Population-Race

T
Two-thirds of Ferguson's 21,000 residents are black but, before the shooting, there were only three black police officers on the force. The Ferguson police department is now under federal investigation for possible civil rights violations stemming from the riots in August when cops shot rubber bullets and tear gas at protesters.

When it comes to arrests, the statistics are also telling. From January to April this year, there were 27 whites arrested in Ferguson compared with 217 blacks — or about eight times as many black arrests as white arrests.

Ferguson-Police-Racial-Profiling-Data-for-2013

It's about race but also economics. One way to think of Ferguson is as an island of predominately black lower-income families struggling to make ends meet, surrounded by white middle-class neighborhoods.
"It's not even so much a white Ferguson," John Bonds, a community leader who lives in near the neighborhood where Brown was shot, told Mash in August.
"There is a 'haves' in Ferguson and there is a 'have nots' in Ferguson."

What if Wilson isn't indicted?

Although the clouds of teargas have lifted, and the humvees and heavy weaponry wielded by police officers are gone, protesters are still demonstrating in and around Ferguson, calling for Wilson's arrest. But what happens if the officer isn't charged or indicted on a lesser charge, such as manslaughter?
Patricia Bynes, Democratic committeewoman of Ferguson, said protesters have been preparing themselves for that news for weeks, and they have asked officials to give them a 48-hour notice of when the grand jury decision would be announced. However, Gov. Nixon has refused to give an exact date, saying only that the news would come sometime in mid to late November.
"People have already been prepared," Bynes told Mash. "This isn't new to people who are in this."
Bynes said she wouldn't be surprised if there was a repeat scene of August in the coming days in Ferguson. She added that many of protesters who have been in front of the police department for weeks said they would stay at home if Wilson wasn't indicted because the protests could turn violent.
Gov. Nixon held a press conference last week to lay out security plans ahead of the decision, which includes bringing in the National Guard again, if needed. He said Missouri law enforcement has undergone nearly 5,000 hours of specialized training, with an emphasis on protecting the civil rights of demonstrators.
"This is America. People have a right to express their views and grievances," Nixon said. "But they do not have a right to put their fellow citizens and property at risk."

FBI nabs men allegedly planning to use pipe bombs during Ferguson protests

Posted: 22 Nov 2014 01:31 AM PST

FBI agents walk past a makeshift memorial for Michael Brown Saturday, Aug. 16, 2014.
Two men who allegedly purchased explosives to use in pipe bombs that they planned to set off during protests in Ferguson, Missouri were arraigned Friday in federal court.
The FBI arrested the unidentified men, who are supposedly members of the new Black Panthers, according to CBS, on Thursday as part of an undercover operation.
The St. Louis area residents were arrested on outstanding warrants, FBI spokeswoman Rebecca Wu told CBS.
The arrests come as Ferguson nervously awaits a grand jury decision on whether to indict the white police officer who shot and killed unarmed black teen Michael Brown on Aug. 9. Police Officer Darren Wilson has been on paid administrative leave since the shooting, which has prompted months of protests.
Many expect demonstrators to come out en masse following the grand jury announcement. As a result, the FBI has deployed 100 agents and the St. Louis County Police Department has stocked up on 650 teargas grenades, 2,000 plastic handcuffs and 6,000 pepper balls, according to ABC. Police officers have also received 5,000 hours of additional training.
However, St. Louis authorities and protest leaders did announce Fridayagreed-upon "rules of engagement," which include limiting the use of teargas and rubber bullets and open channels of communication between police and protesters to deescalate heated situations.

10 Reasons Why I Ignored Your Resume

Posted: 22 Nov 2014 01:22 AM PST

This article is part of DBA, a new series on Mashable about running a business that features insights from leaders in entrepreneurship, venture capital and management.
A lot of people want jobs in marketing, which is great news for those of us currently hiring. However, after a decade of screening, interviewing and onboarding marketers, there are still some mistakes that I constantly see. Here are examples of some mistakes you should avoid.

1. You use a Hotmail or AOL email address

Marketers should see into the future, not live in the past, so unless you're applying for a job as a historian for 1999, I would suggest updating your email address, perhaps to a Gmail address. Bonus points if you use an email address associated with your own custom domain because it shows you know something about using the web and technology.

2. I can't find you on Google

You don't have to be popular like Michael Jordan or Michael Jackson, but you should be present enough on the web that I can easily find your LinkedIn profile, content you have created, your Twitter account, or your personal web page just by typing your name into Google.

3. Your last tweet is from 2011

Tweeting

Sending a tweet.
Don't tell me you're a digital guru if you haven't tweeted in the last three years. You don't have to have a million followers (though I'll pay closer attention if you do), but you do need to be participating in the conversation on a regular basis by sharing other people's content and staying current. A few tweets a week is enough; a month long lapse is unacceptable. I'd rather see you using one network well and not have accounts on the others, than have accounts everywhere and use none of them effectively.

4. Your public Facebook photos resemble "Frank the Tank"

Doing keg stands when you're young is cool (believe it or not, I did a few back in the day) but there is literally no excuse for any of them to be in your public Facebook profile. Shirtless or bikini photos have no place in your public-facing profile on any network, so plan accordingly unless you're applying to be Will Farrell's stunt double; in which case, best of luck to you.

5. Your LinkedIn photo is a selfie

LinkedIn is, by definition, a professional network. To that end, I think it's fair to expect your photo there to be professional-looking. Do you need a glamour shot or Annie Leibovitz-quality image to get hired? Absolutely not. But you should be looking straight to the camera, show your entire face (emo, shadowy portraits are cool for Instagram but not for LinkedIn), and be appropriately sized for the channel.

6. The only number on your resume is your phone number

Metrics

Marketing is no longer arts and crafts — you need to be measurable and efficient to succeed. As a result, if your resume doesn't include a single quantifiable metric to show your accomplishments, you're likely not going to be a good fit on a marketing team today.

7. You speak exclusively in business babble

Tell me what you're doing and what you have done in a clear, concise manner — limit the business babble. No one wants to read about how you "leverage responsibilities to meaningfully impact the organization's directional strategy." Tell me what you marketed, sold or championed within your company and how it moved the needle — no gobbledygook required.

8. You haven't written anything since college

Your writing sample should not be a college term paper. Now there are countless channels to publish your work, so whether you self-publish through LinkedIn, post to Medium, or just keep your own blog current, you should be able to provide a current work sample that doesn't have your college professor's edits all over it. Every single person on our marketing team does some form of content creation, so we need people who are exceptional and committed to publishing or producing content early and often.

9. You applied for 15 positions on our team

Being eager to join a company is a good thing; being desperate is not. Invest the time to craft a cover letter and resume tailored to the job you truly want rather than trying to boil the ocean by applying to dozens of jobs in the same category. Not sure which position is a fit based on your skill set? Shoot a quick clarifying email to the hiring manager or recruiter before applying: Doing so may help you choose the right fit based on your experience and interests.

10. You forget to use Ctrl + F

Everyone knows spelling errors are unacceptable, but it's amazing to me how many cover letters we get addressed to the wrong people or referencing another local company instead of HubSpot. Finding the time to create 100 different cover letters is nearly impossible, but you should have tailored cover letters and resumes for the types of positions you are applying for and invest the time and energy to ensure the company name, hiring manager and position are correctly spelled and positioned throughout your application materials.
Job hunting is hard, so don't make it harder that it has to be. Do yourself a favor and don't give a company a reason not to hire you before you even get to the interview. Marketing has changed, adapt your job search strategy accordingly!

4 messages that job postings send talent by mistake

Erin Kissane of Knight-Mozilla OpenNews recently took an informal survey on Twitter with a simple question:

The answers, which Kissane logged in Storify, were insightful and addressed quite a few topics. Some of these things employers may be communicating on purpose. Some, not so much.

"Get ready for long hours"

Good help can be hard to find, but implying that a job requires 80-hour weeks can spook talent. If that's what you want, so be it, but be careful and be upfront. Buzzwords like "ping pong" or talking up the in-office perks can make it seem like you expect people to live at the office.

"We're looking for bros that like to rage"

Again, you probably aren't saying this on purpose. But language matters, and potential applicants are reading into your words to get an idea of the internal culture.

"That the ends justify the means"

Business is competitive, but try not to sound like you're going to get ahead by any means necessary. Enthusiasm is good. So is a bit of humanity.

Salary requirements

Money is an inevitable and necessary topic when it comes to hiring, but maybe don't demand a number out of the gate. It can come off as an attempt to push down wages.

Radio hosts offer Bill Cosby's crowd $1,000 to heckle him mid-show

Posted: 22 Nov 2014 01:10 AM PST

Bill Cosby on Nov. 6.
UPDATE: The hecklers didn't show up, but Bill Cosby got a standing ovation.
MELBOURNE, Florida — Two local radio personalities are urging attendees of Bill Cosby's Friday night comedy show to stand up mid-performance, yell something about the sexual assault allegations against him, and videotape their heckling.
Sabrina Ambra, one of the radio hosts, told Mashable they will give $1,000 to each protester. The sold-out venue here — the King Center for the Performing Arts — can seat 2,016.
"The plan is to confront Cosby and force him to address the rape allegations that he has dismissed time and time again," said Ambra, who co-hosts radio showThe News Junkie with Shawn Wasson.
"We're calling this 'Operation: Cosby Spartacus.' We're doing this in hopes that multiple people in the audience will do what the mainstream media has failed to accomplish."

Extra security will be on hand because of the anticipated protests, a ticket agent at the venue confirmed to Mashable. A specific number of guards wasn't disclosed.
Local residents have criticized the venue for not canceling Cosby's appearance — like at least four other venues across the United States have — amid the growing number of sexual assault allegations Cosby is facing from multiple women who are coming forward.
Ambra said she's heard from people who are "absolutely" interested in following through with the protest, though she didn't specify whether any ticketholders had confirmed they would participate.
"We've gotten numerous emails and calls about participation and a lot of support from listeners and locals," she said.

The 77-year-old comedian has remained silent, refusing to address the allegations, even as TV networks have begun distancing themselves. TVLand said it would no longer air reruns of The Cosby Show, NBC halted development on of a Cosby sitcom, and Netflix postponed a comedy special.
Cosby's lawyer, John P. Schmitt, on Sundaysaid his client has no intention of addressing the allegations.
"Over the last several weeks, decade-old, discredited allegations against Mr. Cosby have resurfaced," he said, before newer allegations surfaced throughout this week. "The fact that they are being repeated does not make them true. Mr. Cosby does not intend to dignify these allegations with any comment. He would like to thank all his fans for the outpouring of support and assure them that, at age 77, he is doing his best work. There will be no further statement from Mr. Cosby or any of his representatives."
Among the newer allegations is one from model and TV host Janice Dickinson, who during an interview on Entertainment Tonight said Cosby attacked her three decades ago.
Earlier this week, the King Center explained its decision to not cancel Friday night's show with this statement:
Mr. Cosby is a well-respected member of the entertainment community and one of America's most beloved performers. While we are aware of the allegations reported in the press, we are only in a position to judge him based on his career as an entertainer and humanitarian. His sold out show at the King Center for the Performing Arts this Friday, November 21 will go on as scheduled.
But Cosby has canceled appearances on the Queen Latifah and David Letterman.
Some of the allegations against Cosby are years old, but they recently resurfaced in the public eye when a video from comedian Hannibal Buress picked up steam online. In it, Buress said Cosby "raped women."

Radio hosts Wasson and Ambra are hoping to make Cosby break his silence.
"We believe that Bill Cosby has successfully avoided addressing these allegations for more than 14 years," Ambra said, "and we hope to put an end to that silence tonight."

Bill Cosby gets standing ovation amid mounting sex abuse allegations

Posted: 22 Nov 2014 01:10 AM PST

Comedian Bill Cosby performs at the Maxwell C. King Center for the Performing Arts in Melbourne, Florida, on Nov. 21.
MELBOURNE, Florida — "We love you, Bill Cosby," yelled a woman at the 77-year-old comedian's sold-out show at the King Center for the Performing Arts on Friday night.
With extra security guarding every exit, the positive affirmation was the only interruption during Cosby's 90 minute performance. The hecklers were absent inside the venue, even though a local radio station earlier in the day encouraged attendees to taunt Cosby about the escalating sexual assault allegations being made against him.
The relatively tame show ended just as it had begun, with a standing ovation that lasted more than 30 seconds. Cosby charmed audience members — some of whom were surrounded by empty seats despite the venue claiming the show sold out — with relatable family-friendly humor peppered with just a few tinges of subtle yet awkward adult references.
Outside King Center, though, just before the show started, protestor Julie Lemaitre attracted some attention while holding a sign emblazoned with, "RAPE IS NO JOKE."

She was one of only two protesters who demonstrated their anger.
Melbourne resident Rob Tinsley, 58, whose brother turned down a ticket because of the sexual misconduct allegations, praised Cosby's humor and vivid expressions.
"Bill tells everyday stories that we all go through in a way that's very funny," Tinsley said, adding that he wasn't surprised about the two standing ovations.
"A great entertainer can block out everything. It's sad to hear what's happening, but tonight he was clean and family-oriented."

Cosby, who gave a thumbs up during the crowd's first standing ovation at the beginning of the show, primarily stuck to childhood stories about 9th-grade athletics, his mom's pregnancy and sibling rivalries — all while wearing a sweater that said "HELLO FRIEND" on it. It's a reference to the Hello Friend/Ennis William Cosby foundation, which is named after his son who was fatally shot in 1997.
Cosby prefaced one story by saying he's a "mature husband, father and grandfather" before offering to give advice to young guys in the audience. At one point, he said "I want all of you men to know that I said, 'Listen, woman!'" before continuing a joke about his wife.
Leading up to Friday, some local residents had criticized the venue for not canceling Cosby's appearance amid the growing number of sexual assault allegations Cosby is facing from multiple women who are just now coming forward. Venues in Nevada, Illinois, Arizona, South Carolina and Washington have all recently canceled Cosby appearances.
He didn't mention the allegations during the show, even as TV networks have begun distancing themselves. TVLand said it would no longer air reruns of The Cosby Show, NBC halted development on of a Cosby sitcom, and Netflix postponed a comedy special.
But in an exclusive interview before his show, Cosby told county outlet Florida Today why he's been mum: "I know people are tired of me not saying anything, but a guy doesn't have to answer to innuendos. People should fact check. People shouldn't have to go through that and shouldn't answer to innuendos."
While Cosby was busy performing, his attorney Martin Singer released this statement:
The new, never-before-heard claims from women who have come forward in the past two weeks with unsubstantiated, fantastical stories about things they say occurred 30, 40, or even 50 years ago have escalated far past the point of absurdity. These brand new claims about alleged decades-old events are becoming increasingly ridiculous, and it is completely illogical that so many people would have said nothing, done nothing, and made no reports to law enforcement or asserted civil claims if they thought they had been assaulted over a span of so many years. Lawsuits are filed against people in the public eye every day. There has never been a shortage of lawyers willing to represent people with claims against rich, powerful men, so it makes no sense that not one of these new women who just came forward for the first time now ever asserted a legal claim back at the time they allege they had been sexually assaulted. The situation is an unprecedented example of the media's breakneck rush to run stories without any corroboration or adherence to traditional journalistic standards. Over and over again, we have refuted these new unsubstantiated stories with documentary evidence, only to have a new uncorroborated story crop up out of the woodwork. When will it end? It's long past time for this media vilification of Mr. Cosby to stop.
Among the newer allegations is one from model and TV host Janice Dickinson, who during an interview on Entertainment Tonight said Cosby attacked her three decades ago.
Mash was in attendance Friday and live-tweeted the show:
Cosby has more than two dozen scheduled shows left on his comedy tour, though more could get canceled amid mounting allegations, none of which he has ever been charged.
The buzz about some of Cosby's decades-old allegations resurfaced when a video from comedian Hannibal Buress gained steam online. In it, Buress said Cosby "raped women."

Poo-Pourri is back to remind us that everybody poops (even Santa)

Nothing will get you into the holiday spirit like a pun-filled commercial featuring Father Christmas in his most vulnerable state.
Continuing its tradition of funny ads, toilet deodorizing company Poo-Pourri has a new spot featuring Santa in a bit of a pinch. Unfortunately, nature made its call while Old Saint Nick was delivering presents, and his foul stench woke three sleeping kids.
The kids remind Santa that a quick spritz of Poo-Pourri before you go is enough to fix any stinky situation.

The Ukrainian revolution, one year on

Posted: 21 Nov 2014 02:39 AM PST

Protesters at the 'The March of a Million' at Independence Square
KIEV, Ukraine – On a recent autumn afternoon, Mustafa Nayyem sat in the corner booth of a dark café in the Ukrainian capital, sipping coffee and reminiscing about how the revolution began a year ago.

"It was a real uprising of the people, totally grassroots," he said. "There were no politics, and no politicians to spoil the movement."
In fact, Nayem felt pretty alone when he called on other Ukrainians to join him on Kiev's Independence Square to protest then-president Viktor Yanukovych scuttling an association agreement with the European Union in favor of another deal with Russia.

It would be the president's undoing, though nobody knew it at the time.

"Come on guys, let's be serious: If you really want to do something, don't just 'like' this post," Nayyem wrote in a Facebook post on Nov. 21. "Write that you are ready, and we can try to start something."

Another post read: "RT!! Meet at 22:30 under the monument of Independence. Dress warmly; take umbrellas, tea, coffee, and friends."

That night, some 1,500 people came into the square which is also known as Maidan. At first, the demonstrators were disorganized and the protest dispersed shortly after midnight. But the following day — and the day after that — a bigger crowd gathered. And not just on the square in Kiev but in several other cities around the country.
The seed had been sown; the revolution was under way.

Within weeks, as many as 100,000 people in the streets. A diplomatic agreement on cooperation signaling whether Ukraine was turning east or west had become the lightning rod.
Ukrainians knew it was now or never: Step into the future with a new partner — or give up and resign to repeating the days of the past?

After police attacked students gathered on the square the night of Nov. 30, beating them into a bloody pulp with truncheons, people became even more determined. Protesters formed self-defense groups and armed themselves with baseball bats and DIY weapons, plywood shields and orange construction helmets for protection.

They expanded their hold on the square and stormed government buildings, erecting barricades made up of park benches and cement planters, ice and cobblestones wrapped in razor wire. Men took turns taking shifts on the barricades. The Ukrainians were preparing for a war.

On Dec. 8, things came to a head with the symbolic toppling of a statue of Soviet leader Vladimir Lenin, a symbol of Ukraine's past. As the monument crashed down, the group shouted, "Yanukovych, you're next!" referring to the president, before smashing it to pieces with sledgehammers.

After violent clashes with police that cost the lives of more than 100 people, Yanukovych fled to Russia three months later, fearing perhaps that he was next.
Petro Poroshenko, a billionaire pro-Western businessman who had demonstrated on Maidan, was elected president and has promised greater cooperation with the West.

But the revolution hasn't come to pass as expected, in part because of Russian involvement.
In March, the Crimean peninsula was annexed by Russian forces and the industrial heartland in the east is "temporarily occupied" by Russian-backed separatists. In that seven month conflict, 4,000 civilians have already been killed.

The country remains on the brink of economic collapse, its currency — the hryvnia — having dropped to historic lows. (In fact, the hryvnia was the worst performing currency in the world this year.)

While the conflict with Russia seems frozen for now, rhetoric from Kiev and Moscow this past week suggests de-escalation isn't exactly on the cards, either.
Russian President Vladimir Putin claims to be worried about ethnic cleansing and the rise of neo-Nazis in Ukraine. For his part, Poroshenko has said his country was "prepared for a scenario of total war" with Russia.

While the threat of all-out war casts often overshadows it, there is still a revolution to be fought.

"In terms of change of government, Euromaidan was a success, because it led to a radical change of leadership in Ukraine," says Natalka Zubar, a Euromaidan leader in Kharkiv, Ukraine's second largest city. "But in terms of other objectives — like anti-corruption and government transparency and other democratic transformations — of course we have a long way to go."

"I hear lots of talk, but I don't see the political will from this government to carry out the reforms we need," she added.

Mustafa, who now leads a group of pro-Western Euromaidan revolutionaries turned lawmakers, knows better than anyone how far the movement have come. But he, too, acknowledges the long road ahead.

"These are just the first results," he said.

U.S. tourism industry excited about visa change for Chinese visitors

Posted: 21 Nov 2014 02:11 AM PST

A group of tourists from China take in the sights of the New York Stock Exchange and Federal Hall National Memorial, in New York on June 15, 2012.
NEW YORK — A rule change allowing Chinese visitors to return to the United States multiple times over a 10-year period is being hailed as a boon to American tourism, with the federal government predicting the economic impact could be $85 billion by 2021.
Chinese visitors are already familiar faces in major U.S. destinations such as New York City, San Francisco and Las Vegas, but other parts of the country could also see a boost.
"One simple decision like this ... is going to reap tremendous benefits to the country," said Chris Thompson, president and CEO of Brand USA, the public-private partnership responsible for marketing the U.S. as a travel destination.
The U.S. and China jointly announced the change last week at a conference of world leaders in Beijing, and it has already gone into effect. Business and short-term visas that currently expire after one year will now be valid for 10 years.
Brand USA also called the change an improvement for education exchanges, noting Chinese students spent $8 billion in the U.S. in 2013. Student and cultural exchange visas will last for five years.
Obtaining a U.S. visa involves waiting in long lines at a consulate during the work day, passing an interview and then waiting at least three days, a process that won't change under the new rules.
"That is going to allow many folk the encouragement to go ahead and apply for the visa no matter how hard it is. ... It's worth the effort," said Harry Chen, operator of San Francisco-based Joy Holiday, which books tours for Chinese tourists in the western U.S.
Ling Cong, manager of the American department at Beijing-based tourism company China Travel Service, said the longer visas would allow Chinese visitors to launch spur-of-the-moment trips. "Before when Chinese travelers saw some cheap air tickets, they often didn't seize the opportunity because of the issue of getting a visa."
Chinese have been among the fastest-growing and highest-spending U.S. visitors in recent years. In 2013, there were about 1.8 million Chinese visitors to the U.S., contributing about $21 billion to the economy.

According to government figures, Chinese visitors spend about $7,000 per person in the U.S., compared with the average of $4,500 for all overseas visitors. In announcing the visa change, the White House said it could result in a $85 billion economic impact in the U.S. by 2021.
In New York City, Chinese visitors have increased by more than 300% over the past five years, with 646,000 in 2013 and 743,000 expected by the end of this year. Las Vegas gets an estimated 300,000 Chinese visitors annually, and officials hope to see that number increase to more than 1 million by 2021.
Li Qing, a woman in her 30s who works for a securities company in Shenzhen, said in a telephone interview that she has been to the U.S., but would go more often with a 10-year visa. She hopes to get one soon, to go along with a 10-year visa she recently obtained for Canada, so that she can do combined trips to the two countries.
"This should have happened years ago," she said.
"In offering the 10-year visa now, I guess politics is making a concession to money."

Catherine Prather, senior vice-president of the National Tour Association, said the U.S. is "a dream destination" for Chinese travelers, and said the rule changes could lead to more visits to national parks or smaller cities.
The benefits extend in both directions, as frequent American travelers to China will now be able to bypass the yearly effort to get visas. That process could be a tedious one, requiring long waits in lines.
"I go to China quite often," said Phil Otterson, president of Abercrombie & Kent USA, a luxury tour company that offers trips to China. "It's going to be a lot easier for me now."

Brennan and Booth prep for arrival of Daisy's baby in 'Bones' sneak peek

Posted: 21 Nov 2014 02:09 AM PST

Baby Sweets is on its way, and in the following exclusive sneak peek from the new episode of Bones, Aunt Brennan and Uncle Booth are on the case.
I mean, of course they are. If your dead friend's first child was about to be born, you'd step up your game, too. And that appears to be exactly what Brennan has done, gathering a heaping pile of baby goods for the soon-to-arrive bundle of joy.

There's also an actual case to be solved in this episode, naturally. In this one, the body of a famous crossword puzzle master is discovered in an urban fracking site. (Extremely topical, really, considering the latest developments on the fracking front.)
The episode airs Nov. 20 at 8 on FOX.

5 Obama quotes that chart his changing course on immigration

Posted: 21 Nov 2014 02:07 AM PST

President Barack Obama speaks in the Brady Press Briefing Room of the White House in Washington, on Aug. 1.
In a speech tonight, U.S. President Barack Obama is expected to announce a dramatic overhaul of the country's immigration system that will include measures that the president considered illegal not long ago.
The suite of executive actions, which could shield millions of undocumented immigrants from deportation, have been debated by many lawmakers, including the president himself.
Obama has previously said it would be a violation of the law or "difficult to defend legally" to suspend the deportation of immigrants without support from Congress. Now he seems to have reversed his opinion. Below, we've laid out five quotes from the past few years that show how Obama's thinking has changed.

At a Univision town hall meeting at Bell Multicultural High School in Washington, D.C., Obama was asked whether he could grant temporary protective status to undocumented students. He answered that he couldn't. While the question (and the answer) was specific, it indicated his thoughts on the broader subject of using executive action to protect people from deportation.
The president went on to say that for him to "ignore those congressional mandates would not conform with my appropriate role as president."

The president took part in a Google Hangout in February last year and was asked what he would do to prevent more deportations until Congress passed immigration reform.
Ultimately, Obama said his hands were tied but added: "This is something that I've struggled with throughout my presidency."

September 2013

Obama

When he appeared on Noticias Telemundo in September, 2013, Obama said he couldn't expand deportation protection beyond a group of undocumented immigrants known as "Dreamers" — those who had come to the United States before the age of 16 and who had not yet turned 31. To do so, he said, would be "ignoring the law."
Now, though, it appears the president's executive actions will remove the upper age limit requirement.

Members of the audience heckled Obama with questions about immigration reform during a speech he gave at the Betty Ann Ong Chinese Recreation Center in San Francisco last year. Many of the questions focused on why the president hadn't already acted unilaterally to change the nation's immigration system. Obama said to do so would be "violating our laws" and that he would take the "harder path" through Congress.

Though Obama has previously said that changing the immigration system by blocking deportations would not be appropriate for a president, he now says it would be wrong to not "improve the system."

The world's tallest roller coaster is coming to Orlando, Florida, in 2017, but you don't have to wait until then to get a peek at the ride.
"The Skyscraper" coaster will take thrill-seekers on a wild ride around a 535-foot-tall tower. It will be located at Skyplex complex in Orlando.

The world's tallest roller coaster is currently Kingda Ka at Six Flags Great Adventure in New Jersey. It is 456 feet tall.

Secret Service arrests woman with gun outside White House

Posted: 21 Nov 2014 02:01 AM PST

The White House is seen at sunset in Washington, Thursday, Nov. 20, 2014, before President Barack Obama spoke about his executive action that will affect millions of immigrants living illegally in the US.
Minutes after President Barack Obama finished his nationwide address regarding immigration reform Thursday evening, Secret Service officials arrested a woman with a gun outside the White House.
The Michigan woman, 23-year-old April Lenhart, was walking along the north fence line of the White House on Pennsylvania Avenue around 8:30 p.m. with a 9mm handgun in a holster around her waist, a Secret Service official told CBS. Obama was in the White House at the time.

Secret Service agents are questioning the unidentified woman, who may face charges since her firearm, was not registered, CBS reported.
The arrest comes on the heels of high-profile Secret Service flaps regarding fence jumpers and security lapses at the White House.

There won't be a net neutrality decision this year

Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Tom Wheeler in Washington, on Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2014.
The new rules to govern the Internet will wait until 2015.
The Federal Communications Commission will not vote on Open Internet rules in December, according to the regulator's newly released agenda for its December open meeting.
The December meeting represented the last opportunity for the FCC to vote on new regulations in 2014. Initial timelines projected a resolution by the end of the year, but a wave of public comments along with pressure from U.S. President Barack Obama had led to expectations that the issue would end up being resolved in 2015.
Gigi Sohn, an aid to FCC chairman Tom Wheeler, recently noted a high likelihood that the vote would be pushed until next year. Calls for the FCC to abandon the previously conceived plans, which some believed would allow for the creation of fast lanes that violate the concept of net neutrality, led to the rise of so-called reclassification.
Major broadband operators have strongly opposed classification, which would result in the FCC voting to change the set of rules. President Obama has publicly supported reclassification.
On top of that battle, reports of a third plan recently emerged, referred to as a "hybrid" plan. It would see the last-mile connections — those between customers and Internet service providers — be held to strict net neutrality regulations, while industry players could make deals among themselves with FCC oversight.

Report: Ferguson Police Officer Darren Wilson in talks to resign

Posted: 21 Nov 2014 01:57 AM PST

A video still released by the City of Ferguson, Mo. shows officer Darren Wilson attending a city council meeting in February of 2014 .
Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson is in talks to resign ahead of an expected grand jury announcement regarding his killing of unarmed black 18-year-old Michael Brown in August.
News of the possible resignation was first reported by CNN.

But before news of Wilson's alleged exit broke, a police union official told CBS Wilson did not expect criminal charges to surface out of the months of grand jury deliberations. "It's fair to say that neither he nor his defense team expect an indictment," Jeff Roorda, business manager for the St. Louis Police Officers' Association, said, according to CBS.
But an attorney for Wilson, Neil Bruntager, told CBS the defense team has "absolutely no idea" about which direction the grand jury is leaning. "The only expectation that we would have is that the grand jury would be thorough and fair," he said.
An announcement regarding the grand jury's take on a criminal indictment is expected any day now and Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon has declared a State of Emergency in preparation for serious backlash from angry protesters that have been calling for Wilson's arrest for months.
Wilson has been on paid administrative leave since the killing.

UKIP win Rochester by-election, taking second seat in Westminster

Mark Reckless arrives at the ballot counting centre with his wife Catriona in Medway Park
LONDON — UKIP has easily won the Rochester & Strood by-election, giving the anti-European Union party its second seat in Westminster.
Mark Reckless took 42.1 percent of the vote — he is the second Conservative to leave the party and win back the seat for UK Independence Party.
Immigration was a big issue during the campaign and earlier this week Reckless faced criticism after comments he made concerning European migrants that currently live in the UK.

The Conservative candidate Kelly Tolhurst took 34.8 percent, Labour's Naushabah Khan received 16.7 percent, while the junior coalition partners, the Liberal Democrat's candidate Geoff Juby, got just 349 votes — giving him 0.87 percent of the poll, the party's worst ever performance.
Turnout in the constituency was 50.7% with 40,113 votes cast.

It's the second victory for UKIP after the party won the Clacton by-election last month following Douglas Carswell's defection from the Conservatives.
After being declared the winner, Reckless said UKIP has emerged as a radical party representing the concerns of the working class.
"The radical tradition, which has stood and spoken for the working class, has found a new home in UKIP ... it is not Ed Miliband but UKIP that represents the concerns of most working men and women," Reckless said in his victory speech.
"Rochester & Strood was our 271st most winnable seat, if we can win here, we can win across the country. If you vote UKIP you get UKIP ," Reckless said responding to claims by the Conservative party that a vote for UKIP in the general election in May is a vote for Labour.

The Conservative Party said it was disappointed with the result but said there were "different circumstances" in a by-election.
"We will fight every single day to win this seat back," Grant Shapps Conservative Party Chairman told the BBC.
Meanwhile, a Labour MP has stepped down from the shadow cabinet after a tweet she sent, showing a house with three England flags and a white van outside with the words "Image from Rochester," prompted accusations of snobbery.

Last night, she said it was never her intention to cause offence with the tweet, but resigned because she did not want to distract from Labour's chance to win the coming general election.

Shop 'til you drop: Big British retailers bringing it this Black Friday

Scenes from an Asda store during last year's Black Friday promotions
LONDON — A number of British retailers will be joining their counterparts on the other side of the Atlantic with offers timed to coincide with Black Friday.
The day, synonymous with the promise of cut-priced goods, long queues and consumerism at its most extreme, happens on Nov. 28, the Friday following Thanksgiving. An import from the United States, it kick starts the holiday shopping season.
New figures from RetailMeNot seen by Mash estimate that people in Britain will spend around £1.3 billion between Black Friday and Cyber Monday on Dec. 1. Last year, the UK spent £341 million on Black Friday and the figures from the online marketplace expects that this will grow by 6.5 percent this year.
Online retailer Amazon.co.uk previously kick-started the notion of Black Friday in the UK but this year some of the top British stores like Tesco, John Lewis and Marks and Spencer are getting in on the game.
"British shoppers are getting their head around the idea of getting a bargain before Christmas," Bryan Roberts analyst with Kantar Retail told Mash.

"When Amazon introduced the concept about four years ago it was met with a shrug of the shoulders."
72% of UK consumers are aware of Black Friday, Marketing Magazine has reported with 22% of them buying something on that day in the past.
Walmart-owned Asda did a number of in-store promotions last year, which Roberts said brought a substantial number of people into stores.
"It was fairly chaotic to say the least with people racing to pick up TVs and bikes," Roberts said. "People were literally queuing around the store along the back wall to get inside and buy bargains."
There were frenzied scenes in a number of the stores with people tweeting about the long queues and fights that broke out.

At least 10 of the top UK retailers are expected to run Black Friday promotions this year, but Roberts said that they are remaining very quiet around the details of those offers.
"Tesco are going activate it in store," Roberts said. "People are being cagey about their plans but rumour has it that Sainsbury's will do things in store."
Here's what we know about five UK retailers' Black Friday offers:

1. Argos

The online retailer has a countdown screen set telling customers to "get set for Black Friday". It's not giving details away about the products it will be discounting but it does say it will be holding a "huge sale" on its tech, toys and TV ranges.

2. Tesco

Tesco has told Mash that it is participating in Black Friday this year, but it hasn't yet released any details of what its offers consist of.

3. Amazon.co.uk

Opting to go for a week of promotions, Amazon's Black Friday Deals Week gets under way on Nov. 24 and runs until Nov. 30. It is planning 3,000 lightning deals during which a limited amount of a product will be sold at a discount for a specific amount of time. Items in its Black Friday promotions include: Sony 48-inch TVs, Canon DSLR cameras, Korg digital pianos, Disney Frozen Pyjama sets and Le Creuset Cookware.

4. John Lewis

"If our competitors have a sale we have a sale," the retailer says, adding that its shops will be open early from 8am. Although it doesn't say what its offers will be, it does say that it will be matching the prices of its competitors. Last year, its traffic between 7am and 8am was 14 times more than anything it had seem before.

5. Currys PC World

The electrical retailer is remaining tight lipped about what it has in store, but it has put up a count-down clock on its website leading up to the day. Opening its stores at 8am, Currys says it will have deals on cookers, TVs, tablets, washing machines, fridge freezers and speakers.

And don't forget ...

Sometimes the reality of Black Friday doesn't quite meet your expectations.
