EPA Accepting Nominations for Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Awards Food Recovery Week of Action is November 17-21 Public Input Helps Protect Clean Water Open Enrollment Has Started: Get Covered Today Everyone Can Help Promote Recycling EPA Accepting Nominations for Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Awards The Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Awards recognize organizations that have created a groundbreaking process or product that helps promote public health while protecting the environment. For nearly 20 years, the awards have created innovative tools with strong environmental impacts. Award-winning technologies have reduced 826 million pounds of hazardous chemicals, saved 21 billion gallons of water, and eliminated 7.8 billion pounds of carbon dioxide releases.  Nominations are due by December 31, 2014. The award categories include: academic, small business, greener synthetic pathways, greener reaction conditions and designing greener chemicals, and climate change. Learn more about the awards and how to apply here. http://go.usa.gov/sdEj Food Recovery Week of Action is November 17-21 One third of all food in the U.S. gets wasted and thrown away. In 2012, food waste weighed 35 million tons and cost Americans $1.3 billion. Reducing this excessive waste can help the environment, and save consumers money. Over the course of 200 days, EPA held more than 400 meetings with a wide range of stakeholders and received over 1 million comments.  EPA will take these comments into consideration while drafting a final rule. You can now sign up for a plan that fits your health and financial needs until February 15, 2015 at HealthCare.gov.  If you already have coverage from the Marketplace, you are encouraged to come back and renew your coverage. If you do not have coverage, visit the Marketplace to learn about the plans in your area, see what financial assistance is available, and get covered.  It's simple. Visit HealthCare.gov, call 1-800-318-2596, or find in-person assistance in your community to find the plan that best meets your needs. Please note that for coverage beginning on January 1, 2015, you must register by December 15, 2014. Everyone Can Help Promote Recycling For years, small towns and big cities alike have been helping the environment through recycling programs. The true key to their success, however, is the efforts of individual citizens in these communities. Americans generate approximately 250 million tons of municipal solid waste every year and currently recycle only 35 percent of their trash. November 15 was America Recycles Day, but you can make a difference every day when you recycle.
