A New Strategy to Drive Down the "Soft Costs" of Solar

President Obama recently announced that more than 300 organizations in the public and private sector have made commitments to advance the deployment of solar power and invest in energy efficiency. At the same time, recognizing that solar power is an increasingly important building block toward our clean energy future, the White House offered a behind the scenes look at its own rooftop solar panels… a symbol that American solar energy technology is ready for millions of other homeowners across the country today. Solar Deployment Soars in First Quarter

According to SEIA, the U.S. installed 1,330 MW of solar photovoltaics in the first quarter of 2014 to total 14.8 GW installed capacity, enough to power 3 million homes. In another significant development, Q1 2014 was the largest quarter ever for concentrating solar power. Executive Summary: Solar Market Insight Report 2014 Q1.

CSP Thermochemical Energy Storage Projects

SunShot recently announced $10 million for six research and development projects through its CSP: ELEMENTS program (Concentrating Solar Power: Efficiently Leveraging Equilibrium Mechanisms for Engineering New Thermochemical Storage) to develop thermochemical energy storage (TCES) systems that can validate a cost of less than or equal to $15 per kilowatt-hour-thermal (kWht) and operate at temperatures greater than or equal to 650 degrees Celsius. TCES presents opportunities for storing the sun's energy at high densities in the form of chemical bonds for use in utility-scale CSP electricity generation. Read more

Grand Challenge Summit: Bright Outlook to Achieve SunShot Goal

Hundreds of solar energy leaders gathered in southern California to participate in SunShot’s biennial Grand Challenge Summit. Industry leaders, researchers, and policymakers worked together over four days to generate ideas to tackle the SunShot grand challenge to make solar energy fully cost competitive with traditional forms of energy by 2020. For the highlights, check out the blog. Visit the SunShot Summit website to access numerous Summit materials including press releases, news items, photos and videos from the event.
