EPA, Federal Agenices Announce 5-Year Great Lakes Restoration Action Plan
EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy recently released a new Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI) Action Plan that lays out steps that federal agencies will take during the next five years to protect water quality, control invasive species and restore habitat in the Great Lakes System.
The Great Lakes Restoration Initiative was launched in 2010 to accelerate efforts to protect and restore the largest surface fresh water system in the world and to provide additional resources to make progress toward the most critical long-term goals for this ecosystem. The GLRI Action Plan summarizes the actions federal agencies plan to implement that will build on the restoration and protection work carried out under the first Action Plan. EPA Announces New Actions to Curb Greenhouse Gases and Recognizes GreenChill Partners
Building on the President's Climate Action Plan, EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy joined private and public sector leaders at the White House last week to recognize progress and to take new steps to curb emissions of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), potent greenhouse gases used in refrigeration and air conditioning. Read Administrator McCarthy's blog post detailing the new efforts here.http://go.usa.gov/dkvj
The new efforts build upon progress and commitments already made under EPA's GreenChill partnership, which works with the supermarket industry to transition to climate-friendly refrigerants, reduce the amount of refrigerant used, and eliminate harmful refrigerant leaks. EPA recently recognized 13 GreenChill Partners for their exceptional efforts to reduce harmful refrigerant emissions. Read more about the partners here. http://go.usa.gov/dkvV

Join EPA for a Clean Water Thunderclap on September 29
EPA is using Thunderclap to provide a way for people to show their support for clean water and the agency's proposal to protect it. Here's how it works: you agree to let Thunderclap post a one-time message on your social networks (Facebook, Twitter or Tumblr) on Monday, September 29 at 2:00 pm EDT. If 500 or more people sign up to participate before then, the message will be posted on everyone's walls and feeds at the same time. But if fewer than 500 sign up, nothing happens.
Here's the message: "Clean water is important to me. I want EPA to protect it for my health, my family, and my community. www.epa.gov/USwaters"
EPA Works to Combat Climate Change with the Help of Tribal Communities
Many tribal groups have been observing the ebb and flow of rivers and harvests for thousands of years, and understand how to adapt for survival. This knowledge is often called Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) and it holds a tremendous amount of value not only for indigenous groups, but for scientists and policymakers. In this blog post, Jane Nishida, Principal Deputy Assistant Administrator for International and Tribal Affairs, discusses how EPA is integrating TEK and making it a part of the decision-making process.
